Gross Vehicle Mass is the maximum permitted operating mass of the vehicle when loaded. It includes the vehicle, driver, passengers, fuel, accessories, tools, cargo and towball download. A bull bar, winch, tray, canopy, batteries and touring equipment can consume payload before luggage or passengers are added. When should you consider an upgrade? Consider payload early if the vehicle will carry a permanent canopy or service body, tools, water, long-range fuel, dual batteries, camping equipment or significant towball weight. Planning before accessories are fitted makes it easier to choose appropriate components and protect front- and rear- axle capacity.
Pre-registration and post-registration pathways
Approval processes differ depending on the vehicle, kit and whether the upgrade occurs before or after first registration. Some kits may be available through a pre-registration second-stage manufacturing pathway, while registered vehicles may require certification under the relevant state modification process. The available result is specific to the vehicle and approval documentation; it must be confirmed before work is booked.
GVM is not the only limit
An increased GVM does not automatically increase towing capacity, Gross Combination Mass or every axle rating. The vehicle must comply with the approved GVM, front and rear axle limits, tyre and wheel ratings, towing capacity, towbar rating and GCM where applicable. For towing or heavily loaded builds, use actual weighbridge figures rather than estimates.
