A touring fitout is a series of decisions that have to agree with each other. Where you sleep decides your roof load; the fridge decides your power system; the water and fuel decide your payload; and the payload decides whether the suspension under it is adequate. Built in the right order, a ute will take you from Warana to the Cape and back without drama. Built one purchase at a time, it ends up heavy, unbalanced and short of power on the third night.

Sleeping and shelter

A rooftop tent gets you off the ground, sets up in minutes and keeps the tub or canopy free. A soft-shell folds out over the side and gives more floor area for the size; a hard-shell pops straight up, packs away faster and is far better in wind and rain, at more weight and cost. Both need a rated platform - a roof rack or a tray-back canopy - and both need checking against your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating, which is much lower than the static rating that applies once you are parked. An awning and wall kit is the cheapest comfort you will ever buy, and a swag or ground tent is still the lighter answer for a couple of nights.

Power, fridge and kitchen

The 12V fridge is the anchor of the system. Size it, then work backwards: a fridge running through a Queensland summer needs a properly specified dual battery system, a DC-DC charger and usually solar to stay ahead. A fridge slide is the difference between a fridge you use and one you cannot reach past the drawers, and a camp kitchen and a decent water setup turn a campsite from functional into comfortable.

Carrying it - storage, water and fuel

Drawer systems and wing kits turn a tub or canopy into organised, lockable storage, and roof racks and platform racks carry the long and awkward things - a rooftop tent, an awning, recovery tracks, a shovel. Long range fuel and water tanks are where genuine remote capability comes from, and they are heavy: 140 litres of diesel is over 110kg full, and 80 litres of water is another 80. Underbody protection and rated recovery points belong in the same conversation: carrying that much weight down a rutted track puts everything underneath at risk.

Weight, honestly

Almost every heavily built tourer we see is close to its legal limit or over it. Canopy, drawers, tent, fridge, batteries, water, fuel, recovery gear and two adults adds up faster than anyone expects, and towball download finishes the job. Suspension matched to the real loaded weight, and a certified GVM upgrade where the numbers call for it - which we do both pre-registration and post-registration - is the difference between a tourer that handles well and one that is unpleasant and illegal. We would rather weigh the build and tell you than sell you another accessory.

Vehicles, and building it at Warana

We build tourers on the Ford Ranger and Raptor, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X, LandCruiser 79, 200 and 300 Series and Prado, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara and Ford Everest, plus RAM 1500, RAM 2500 and 3500 and the Chevrolet Silverado. Everything is fitted in our own workshop at 4/43 Premier Circuit, Warana - one workshop on the Sunshine Coast, our own fitters, locally owned and operated for 14 years. A full fitout is best done as one planned job: tray or canopy, storage, 12V and solar, lighting, water and fuel, suspension and recovery gear, in an order that means nothing gets pulled apart twice.
