The canopy is the decision that shapes everything else on a ute. It sets how much you carry and how dry it stays, dictates whether a roof rack, a rooftop tent or a set of drawers can go on later, and adds weight in the worst place for payload - behind the rear axle. Choosing it first, around how the vehicle is actually used, saves buying twice. This hub covers canopies, trays, hard lids, roller covers and the storage that goes inside them.
The main types, and who each one suits
A fibreglass or moulded canopy bolts onto the factory tub, matches the vehicle's paint and is the quiet, weathertight, good-looking choice for a family ute or a daily driver. An alloy or steel tray-back canopy replaces the tub entirely along with the tray beneath it; it is the trade and touring answer - square, far more usable internal volume, external toolboxes, jerry and gas bottle holders, and it takes a rooftop tent without argument. A hard lid keeps the tub, seals it and keeps the ute looking standard while still locking your gear away, which suits anyone who occasionally needs to throw something tall in the back. A roller cover or roll top retracts instead of lifting, so you get the same security with the option of a half-open tub, and a soft tonneau is the light, cheap way to keep rain off. The trade-off runs in a straight line: the more sealed and secure, the heavier, and the less flexible the load space.
Payload, and the mistake worth avoiding
A steel tray-back canopy setup can add 250 to 400kg before you put anything in it, and all of that sits behind the rear axle where it eats payload fastest. Add drawers, a fridge, a water tank, a dual battery system and a rooftop tent and a standard dual cab is over its plated GVM on paper long before it feels overloaded to drive. If a full canopy build is the plan, the suspension and a GVM upgrade should be priced into the same conversation, not discovered afterwards. We will do that maths with you honestly, including telling you when a hard lid does the job you actually described.
Brands we carry
Canopies, lids and covers here come from EGR and EGR Auto, RSI Smart Canopy, Utemaster, Maxliner, Piranha Off Road and Triple M Tray Bodies, with Rhino-Rack, Front Runner and MSA 4X4 covering the racks, drawers and internal fitouts that go with them. We are an authorised dealer or distributor for each of them, we hold the spare parts - struts, seals, locks, handles and replacement keys - and every product we supply is ADR compliant. Being able to get a gas strut or a barrel key two years later matters more than most buyers expect.
Vehicles covered
Ford Ranger and Raptor, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-MAX, Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara, GWM Cannon and LDV T60, plus the American trucks - RAM 1500, RAM 2500 and 3500 and the Chevrolet Silverado - where tub dimensions differ enough from the local utes that fitment needs checking against your exact model and cab configuration rather than assumed.
Supplied and fitted at Warana
We fit in our own workshop at 4/43 Premier Circuit, Warana - one location on the Sunshine Coast, our own fitters, 14 years locally owned. A canopy fit is rarely just a canopy: tub removal, a tray fitted and mounted square, third brake light and lighting wired properly, internal 12V and lighting run, drawers and racks mounted to the right rated points, and everything sealed so it stays dry on the Bruce Highway in February. Doing the electrical work at the same time as the build is the difference between a tidy fitout and a loom stapled in later. Customers come to us from Kawana, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Nambour, Noosa, Gympie and Caboolture, and we deliver nationwide on supply-only orders. Tell us the vehicle and what you need to carry, and we will quote the build.
Common questions
Canopy or hard lid?
A hard lid if you want the ute to stay standard-looking, keep the tub, and just need your gear dry and locked. A canopy if you need standing internal volume, want to mount a rooftop tent or roof rack, or are building a permanent touring or work setup. The lid is far lighter, which matters for payload.
How much weight does a canopy add?
A fibreglass tub canopy is usually 60 to 90kg. A full alloy or steel tray-and-canopy setup is commonly 250 to 400kg empty, all of it behind the rear axle. That is why we talk about suspension and GVM in the same conversation as the canopy.
Can I put a rooftop tent on it?
On a tray-back canopy, yes - they are built for it. On a fibreglass tub canopy it depends on the model's rated roof load and the mounting system, and the dynamic rating while driving is much lower than the static rating while parked. We will check the specific figures for your canopy before you buy the tent.
Can you get spare parts later?
Yes - gas struts, seals, locks, handles, replacement barrels and keys, including RollTrac components. We are an authorised dealer for the brands we sell, which is what keeps parts available years later.
