We have access to leading Australian towbar suppliers including TAG, Zetti, Trailboss and Hayman Reese, with options available for many makes and models – not only utes and 4WDs. Ask us for a vehicle-specific recommendation and fitted quote.

Which towbar is right for your vehicle?

The best towbar is not simply the one with the highest advertised rating. Your safe towing limit is governed by the lowest applicable rating across the vehicle, towbar, tow ball or coupling, ball mount, trailer and other towing components. Towball download, trailer brakes, wiring requirements, payload, GVM and GCM may also affect your setup. We confirm the appropriate product for your exact vehicle before fitment.

Type Typical rating* Best suited to Key feature
Class 2 Up to 1,200 kg Small trailers and some bike-rack applications Simple light-duty design; often a fixed or bolt-on tongue
Class 4 Up to 3,500 kg Caravans, boats, horse floats, work and car trailers Heavy-duty 50 mm square receiver with removable ball mount
European Vehicle/product specific European cars and SUVs; customers wanting a neat integrated appearance Swan-neck, detachable or retractable designs may be available
Recovery Vehicle/product specific 4WD touring and off-road use where rated recovery points are required High-clearance towbar with purpose-designed rated recovery points

*Typical maximums only. Actual capacity varies by vehicle and towbar model. Always follow the vehicle and component ratings.

Class 2 light-duty towbar

Class 2 light-duty towbar with bolt-on tongue

Class 2 light-duty towbars

A Class 2 towbar is a practical choice for lighter towing requirements. It is commonly rated up to 1,200 kg, although the actual rating depends on the vehicle and the towbar selected. Class 2 designs often use a fixed or bolt-on tongue and are typically suited to smaller cars, compact SUVs and light-duty applications.

Class 2 may suit

  • Small box or garden trailers
  • Lightweight personal watercraft or small trailers where the combined ratings allow
  • Compatible bike racks, subject to towbar and rack load limits
  • Drivers who tow lighter loads occasionally

Choose Class 2 when your vehicle and load fall within the rated limits and you do not require the versatility of a heavy-duty receiver. Our Sunshine Coast fitting team can check compatibility before recommending a solution.

Class 4 heavy-duty towbar with 50 mm receiver

Class 4 heavy-duty towbar with 50 mm receiver fitted to a dual-cab ute

Class 4 heavy-duty towbars

Class 4 towbars are heavy-duty towing systems commonly rated up to 3,500 kg, subject to the vehicle and towbar specifications. They generally feature a 50 mm x 50 mm square receiver and removable trailer ball mount, providing greater flexibility for towing accessories and different ball-mount heights.

Class 4 may suit

  • Caravans and larger camper trailers
  • Boats, horse floats and car trailers
  • Work trailers and regular heavy towing
  • Utes and 4WDs that require a removable receiver-style hitch
  • Compatible weight-distribution equipment, only where approved for the vehicle and towbar
Important

A Class 4 towbar does not automatically mean every vehicle can tow 3,500 kg. The vehicle manufacturer’s towing capacity, towball download, GVM, GCM and all component ratings must still be observed.

European-style swan-neck towbar

European-style swan-neck towbar fitted to a European SUV on the Sunshine Coast

European-style towbars

European towbars are designed to integrate neatly with the shape and systems of many European vehicles. A curved swan-neck design is common, and depending on the vehicle, fixed, detachable or retractable options may be available. The tow rating remains specific to the vehicle and the approved towbar kit – “European” describes the design and fitment style, not a universal capacity.

Why choose a European towbar?

  • Clean, integrated appearance
  • Vehicle-specific fitment for many European cars and SUVs
  • Detachable or retractable options on selected vehicles
  • Suitable for towing or compatible bike racks within the approved limits
  • Dedicated vehicle wiring may help the vehicle recognise a connected trailer and operate relevant safety functions correctly

The Ute Shop fits towbars to European makes as well as Australian, Japanese, Korean and American vehicles. Contact our Warana workshop with your make, model, year and variant so we can confirm the correct towbar and wiring package.

Recovery towbar with rated recovery points

Recovery towbar with rated recovery points fitted to a 4WD ute

Recovery towbars for 4WDs

A recovery towbar combines towing capability with purpose-designed, rated recovery points for suitable 4WD applications. Compared with a conventional heavy-duty towbar, some recovery models also improve departure clearance, protect vulnerable components and position electrical plugs more securely for off-road travel.

Recovery towbar benefits may include

  • Integrated, clearly identified rated recovery points
  • Higher-clearance design for off-road use
  • Heavy-duty receiver for towing and compatible hitch accessories
  • Stronger underbody protection around the rear crossmember on selected designs
  • A more suitable recovery solution than using an unrated towball or standard tie-down point
Recovery safety

Never carry out a kinetic recovery from a towball, and never assume a receiver, hitch accessory or towbar is recovery rated. Use only the manufacturer-designated recovery points and correctly rated recovery equipment, following all product instructions.

Towbar wiring, brake controllers & towing accessories

A professional towbar installation is more than the steel bar. The correct vehicle-specific wiring helps trailer lights and vehicle electronics operate properly. Depending on the trailer and vehicle, your setup may also require an electric brake controller, Anderson plug, 7-pin or 12-pin trailer connection, auxiliary power wiring, weight-distribution equipment or an appropriate ball mount.

The Ute Shop can help with towing accessories including REDARC Tow-Pro Elite and Tekonsha brake controllers, heavy-duty hitches and weight-distribution systems. We can assess the intended trailer and recommend the components required for a complete, tidy installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Class 2 and Class 4 towbar?

Class 2 is a light-duty option commonly rated up to 1,200 kg and often uses a fixed or bolt-on tongue. Class 4 is a heavy-duty option commonly rated up to 3,500 kg and generally uses a 50 mm square receiver with a removable ball mount. Actual ratings depend on the vehicle and towbar.

Can you fit a towbar to a European car or SUV?

Yes. The Ute Shop supplies and fits towbars for many European vehicles. Fixed, detachable, swan-neck or retractable options may be available depending on the vehicle and supplier.

Does a Class 4 towbar let my vehicle tow 3,500 kg?

Not necessarily. Your legal and safe towing capacity is limited by the lowest applicable rating across the vehicle, towbar, ball mount, coupling and other components. Payload, towball download, GVM and GCM also need to be considered.

What is a recovery towbar?

A recovery towbar is designed for selected 4WDs and includes manufacturer-rated recovery points, often with improved rear clearance. A standard towbar, towball or tie-down point must not be assumed to be recovery rated.

Do I need an electric brake controller?

It depends on the trailer, its braking system and applicable requirements. Our workshop can assess your intended towing setup and recommend a suitable controller and wiring package.

How do I get a towbar quote?

Provide your vehicle make, model, year and variant, plus what you plan to tow and any wiring, brake-controller or recovery requirements. Contact The Ute Shop in Warana for a vehicle-specific fitted quote.

Workshop Buyer's Guide & Technical Fitment Advice
ADR Compliant

Towing legally on the Sunshine Coast is a system, not a single part. The towbar itself is rated, the tongue has its own download limit, the coupling and safety chains are rated separately, and once the trailer passes 2,000kg loaded it must have its own brakes with a controller in the cab. Get one element wrong and the whole combination is non-compliant - which is the part that matters if you are pulling a caravan up the range or a plant trailer between sites. This is a supply-and-fit category more than a shelf category: the bar is quoted against your exact vehicle, and the wiring is where the real work is.

Towbar classes and what they mean

Bars are rated by capacity and by the shape of the job. A heavy duty towbar on a dual cab typically carries a 3,500kg braked rating with a 350kg towball download, which suits most single-axle and tandem vans. A light or medium duty bar is aimed at box trailers and bike racks and is lighter and cheaper. Hitch receiver style bars take interchangeable tongues, so the same bar can run a ball, a hitch, a bike carrier or a recovery hitch. If you already run a rear bar or a wheel carrier, the towbar has to be compatible with it - worth sorting before either part is ordered.

Electric brake controllers - proportional or time-delay

A proportional controller reads how hard the tow vehicle is decelerating and applies the trailer brakes to match, so the van slows with you instead of shoving or dragging. A time-delay controller ramps to a preset level regardless of how hard you are braking; it is simpler and cheaper and perfectly legal, but it never feels as settled on a long descent. There are also trailer-mounted wireless units that live on the van and are operated from a phone or a dash remote, which is the sensible answer if you tow with more than one vehicle. We carry Redarc and Tekonsha controllers and Hayman Reese towing hardware, and we are an authorised dealer for what we sell.

Wiring, and why it is the part that goes wrong

Modern utes use a CAN bus for lighting, so splicing into a tail light the old way sets fault codes, can disable trailer detection and on some vehicles disables the reversing camera or the trailer sway control. A correct installation uses the vehicle-specific harness and plugs into the factory tow module, keeps the 7-pin flat or 12-pin plug wired to the Australian standard, and runs a dedicated fused feed for the trailer's brakes and battery charge line rather than borrowing one. If a dual battery system, a DC-DC charger or an Anderson plug for the van is on the list, doing it in the same visit saves pulling the same panels apart twice.

Weight, and the bit people discover too late

Towball download is carried by the tow vehicle, not the trailer, and it counts towards your GVM. A 350kg download on a ute already carrying a canopy, drawers and a full tank is often what tips a combination over its legal limit - and the combined figure, the GCM, catches people out even more often than GVM does. If you are towing near the top of your rating, load levelling airbag suspension, a suspension upgrade or a full GVM upgrade may be the honest recommendation rather than a bigger bar. We would rather tell you that before you buy.

Vehicles and fitting at Warana

We fit towbars, brake controllers, wiring harnesses, towing mirrors and Anderson plugs to the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X, LandCruiser 79, 200 and 300 Series and Prado, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara, Ford Everest, and the American trucks - RAM 1500, RAM 2500 and 3500 and the Chevrolet Silverado - where the factory tow package and the Australian plug standard do not always agree and need adapting properly. All of it is done in our own workshop at 4/43 Premier Circuit, Warana, and everything we supply is ADR compliant. Tell us the vehicle, the trailer's loaded weight and whether it has its own brakes, and we will quote the bar, the controller and the wiring as one job.

Common questions

When do I legally need trailer brakes?

In Queensland, once the trailer's loaded weight passes 750kg it needs brakes on at least one axle, and over 2,000kg it needs brakes on all axles with a controller in the tow vehicle and a breakaway system. Most caravans sit in the second category.

Proportional or time-delay controller?

Proportional if you tow anything heavy or tow often - it matches the trailer's braking to yours and feels far more settled on a descent. Time-delay is cheaper and fine for an occasional box trailer.

Can you wire a towbar without setting off dash warnings?

Yes - with the vehicle-specific harness that plugs into the factory tow module. Splicing into tail lights on a CAN bus vehicle is what causes the fault codes, and on some utes it disables trailer sway control or the reversing camera.

Does the towball weight count towards my payload?

Yes, and this surprises a lot of people. Towball download is carried by the ute and counts towards GVM. On a fitted-out dual cab towing a large van it is often the single thing that puts the vehicle over its legal limit.
