Weight Distribution Hitches Sunshine Coast

A weight distribution hitch (WDH) uses spring bars to spread some of the trailer’s towball download from the rear axle of the tow vehicle forward to the front axle and back to the trailer axles. It helps level the combination, returns weight to the front wheels for steering and braking, and reduces rear sag when towing a heavy caravan or trailer.

Do I need a weight distribution hitch?

A WDH is worth considering when the rear of the tow vehicle sags noticeably or the front feels light once the trailer is connected, which is common with larger caravans and heavy trailers. It does not increase the vehicle’s towing capacity, towball download limit or GCM. Some vehicle manufacturers restrict or do not recommend weight distribution hitches, so this must be checked for your vehicle and towbar first.

• Your vehicle and towbar manufacturer’s guidance on weight distribution hitches
• Loaded trailer mass and towball download, so the spring bars are correctly rated
• Trailer A-frame and coupling type, including override brakes
• Correct set-up and adjustment, measured at the front and rear wheel arches
