Suspension, Wheels & Recovery Gear Fitted on the Sunshine Coast
Elite vs XTR vs Xtreme vs MXP vs MRP
EFS Shock Absorbers Sunshine Coast
EFS offers five shock absorber ranges for different combinations of daily driving, touring, vehicle load, difficult terrain and suspension adjustability. The Ute Shop can match the correct EFS shock and spring package to your vehicle, accessories, normal load and intended use, then professionally install and inspect the suspension at our Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast.
A shock absorber should not be selected by brand or appearance alone. Vehicle application, spring rate, operating weight, lift height, travel, alignment and legal requirements must be checked as one suspension system.
Which EFS shock absorber should you choose?
The EFS comparison matrix positions each range by vehicle use. Green indicates best suited, orange indicates capable and a dash means adjustability is not a feature. Final availability still depends on the exact vehicle application.
| Range | Best match | Load and terrain | Adjustability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elite | Daily driving and touring | Capable for heavy-duty use and challenging terrain | Not a feature |
| XTR | Daily driving, touring, variable loads and heavy-duty use | Best suited to heavy-duty use and capable on challenging terrain | Not a feature |
| Xtreme | Daily driving, touring, heavy loads and challenging terrain | Best suited across all four use categories | Not a feature |
| MXP | Daily driving, touring, heavy loads and challenging terrain | Best suited across all four use categories | Rebound adjustable |
| MRP | Daily driving, touring, heavy loads and challenging terrain | Best suited across all four use categories | Rebound and compression adjustable |
EFS Elite shock absorbers
Elite is the entry point for daily driving, light off-road use and lightly loaded vehicles. The EFS guide highlights comfort, reliability, improved cooling and value for money. It is best suited to daily driving and touring, while remaining capable for heavier use and challenging terrain when the vehicle application allows.
- Daily driven utes and 4WDs
- Light touring and formed tracks
- Unladen or lightly loaded vehicles
- Drivers prioritising comfort and straightforward operation
EFS XTR shock absorbers
XTR is the big bore touring choice for vehicles carrying variable loads, towing or running additional accessories. The EFS guide identifies larger oil capacity, improved heat dissipation and better heavy-load control, with a design intended for extended off-road use.
- Long distance touring
- Towing and varying cargo
- Vehicles fitted with extra accessories
- Drivers needing stronger load control without external adjustment
EFS Xtreme shock absorbers
Xtreme is designed for consistently heavy loads, frequent towing and rough or corrugated tracks. The EFS guide highlights impact resistance, durability and enhanced control in demanding terrain. It is the non-adjustable option rated best suited across all use categories in the EFS matrix.
- Consistently heavy vehicle loads
- Frequent or heavy towing
- Rough and corrugated tracks
- Drivers wanting demanding terrain capability without adjustment controls
EFS MXP shock absorbers
MXP is the adjustable monotube choice for variable driving conditions and drivers wanting precise control. The EFS guide highlights stability, responsiveness and controlled handling, with up to 30 levels of rebound adjustment. Rebound adjustment changes how quickly the suspension extends after compression.
- Variable road, load and terrain conditions
- Drivers wanting tunable rebound control
- Responsive handling and improved stability
- Applications where the correct MXP kit is available for the vehicle
EFS MRP shock absorbers
MRP is the highest-control option in the EFS range, using monotube remote reservoir construction with rebound and compression adjustment. EFS identifies up to 36 rebound and 24 compression settings. This range is intended for demanding terrain and drivers who understand how to tune the suspension for changing loads and conditions.
- Heavy corrugations and challenging terrain
- Drivers wanting maximum tuning control
- Remote reservoir performance and additional oil capacity
- Applications requiring professional setup of rebound and compression
Understanding shock adjustment
Rebound adjustment controls the rate at which the suspension extends after a bump or compression event. Compression adjustment controls resistance as the suspension compresses. Settings that are too firm or too soft can reduce ride quality, grip and control. Start with the manufacturer recommendation, make small changes and keep left and right settings matched.
Adjustment does not correct the wrong spring rate, overloading, unsuitable tyre pressure, worn bushes or poor wheel alignment. The complete vehicle setup should be assessed before tuning.
Springs, loads, lift height and GVM
Shock absorbers control suspension movement but do not carry the vehicle load. Springs support the weight, so the correct spring rate must reflect the bullbar, winch, canopy, tray, tools, towing load and normal cargo. A heavily rated spring on a lightly loaded vehicle can create an unnecessarily firm ride.
A suspension lift does not automatically increase GVM, axle ratings or legal payload. Where additional carrying capacity is required, ask The Ute Shop about an approved vehicle-specific GVM upgrade and the applicable certification requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Which EFS shock is best for daily driving?
The EFS matrix identifies Elite as best suited to daily driving. XTR, Xtreme, MXP and MRP are also shown as suitable, but the best choice depends on vehicle weight, accessories and intended use.
Which EFS shock is best for towing and variable loads?
XTR is specifically positioned for long distance touring, variable loads, towing and additional accessories. Xtreme, MXP and MRP may suit more demanding combinations depending on the vehicle application.
What is the difference between EFS MXP and MRP?
MXP is a monotube shock with up to 30 levels of rebound adjustment. MRP adds a remote reservoir and offers both rebound and compression adjustment, with up to 36 rebound and 24 compression settings.
Are EFS Elite, XTR and Xtreme adjustable?
No. The EFS matrix shows adjustability as not a feature for Elite, XTR and Xtreme. MXP and MRP are the adjustable choices.
Do new shock absorbers increase GVM?
No. Shock absorbers control suspension movement but do not change the legal GVM or axle ratings. A GVM increase requires an approved vehicle-specific upgrade and certification where applicable.
Can The Ute Shop fit EFS suspension?
Yes. The Ute Shop can recommend and professionally fit compatible EFS shocks, struts and springs at its Warana workshop on the Sunshine Coast.
Send the vehicle make, model, build date and variant, plus details of the bullbar, winch, tray, canopy, tools, towing and usual cargo. Tell us whether the priority is comfort, load control, touring, difficult terrain or adjustability so we can recommend the appropriate EFS range.
Before quoting we confirm the exact EFS application, included components, adjustment range, warranty, spring rate and lift outcome for your vehicle. Product availability and specifications can change.

This is the hub for everything that decides how a loaded ute sits, rides and gets itself out of trouble: springs and shock absorbers, load levelling airbags, certified GVM upgrades, winches, recovery gear and the rated points that make a recovery safe. They belong together because they are one system. A lift kit changes how the vehicle carries weight, the weight decides whether it gets stuck, and the recovery gear is what you reach for when it does.
Suspension - what the options actually do
A lift kit raises ride height for clearance and larger tyres, usually 40 to 50mm on a dual cab, which is where most kits stop because beyond that the driveline angles and the ADR height rules start working against you. A load-carrying kit may not lift much at all; it is rated to hold a constant load level rather than to gain clearance, and that is the right kit for a tradesman's ute or a permanent canopy build. Load levelling airbag suspension sits inside or beside the existing springs and is adjusted by pressure, which is the sensible answer for a ute that is empty on Monday and towing a van on Friday - but it manages load, it does not raise your legal limit. That is what a certified GVM upgrade does, and we do those both pre-registration and post-registration. Shock absorbers are the part people under-think: twin-tube units are quiet and comfortable, monotube and remote-reservoir shocks shed heat on long corrugations and are worth it if you genuinely spend time on dirt.
Winches and recovery
Electric winch capacity should be roughly twice the vehicle's loaded weight, which puts most dual cabs at 9,500 to 12,000lb. Synthetic rope is lighter, safer when it fails and easier to handle than steel cable, but it needs a different fairlead and does not like heat or grit. A winch also needs a bull bar with a winch cradle, a battery and charging system that can hold up under load, and rated recovery points bolted to the chassis - the factory tie-down hooks on a ute are not recovery points, and using them is how people get hurt. Snatch straps, soft shackles, recovery tracks, a damper and a set of gloves finish the kit. We stock Runva winches and Carbon Offroad recovery gear, alongside Lovells, Outback Armour, Tough Dog, Dobinsons, EFS 4x4, ORI and Polyair for suspension, and Campboss and Outback Kitters for the touring hardware around it. We are an authorised dealer for all of them and everything we supply is ADR compliant.
Vehicles covered
Ford Ranger and Raptor, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X, Toyota LandCruiser 79, 200 and 300 Series and Prado, Mitsubishi Triton, Mazda BT-50, Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara and Ford Everest, plus RAM 1500, RAM 2500 and 3500 and the Chevrolet Silverado. American trucks in particular are worth a conversation before ordering - spring rates and kit availability differ a long way from the local dual cabs, and not every kit that fits the truck is certified for it here.
Supplied, fitted and aligned at Warana
Suspension is the category where fitting quality shows up fastest. We fit in our own workshop at 4/43 Premier Circuit, Warana, on the Sunshine Coast, and a suspension job leaves here corner-weighted where the kit calls for it, torqued to spec and wheel-aligned afterwards - an alignment is not optional after a lift, and skipping it is why some lifted utes chew out a set of front tyres in a few thousand kilometres. Customers come through from Kawana, Caloundra, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Nambour, Noosa, Gympie and Caboolture, and we deliver nationwide for owners doing their own fitting. Tell us what the ute carries, what it tows and where it actually goes, and we will spec it around that rather than around a catalogue.
Common questions
How much lift can I legally run?
As a rule of thumb, up to 50mm of combined suspension and tyre height increase is the straightforward path in Queensland; beyond that you are into certification. There are also driveline and brake-line limits that arrive before the legal one on most dual cabs. We will tell you where your build sits.
Airbags or heavier springs?
Airbags if the load changes - empty during the week, loaded or towing on weekends. Heavier springs if the load is permanent, like a fitted canopy and drawers. Neither one raises your legal GVM; only a certified upgrade does that.
What size winch do I need?
Roughly twice the vehicle's loaded weight, which puts most fitted-out dual cabs at 9,500 to 12,000lb. Undersizing is false economy - a winch working at its limit gets hot and slow exactly when you need it, and it needs a bull bar cradle and a healthy charging system behind it.
Do I need a wheel alignment after a lift?
Yes, every time. Changing ride height changes camber and caster, and a lifted ute that is not realigned will wear the inside edges off a set of front tyres surprisingly quickly. We align in-house as part of the job.
