Find Dobinsons Suspension for My 4WDWhich Dobinsons Shock Absorber Should I Choose?
| RANGE | DESIGN | BEST SUITED TO | MAIN DIFFERENCE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin Tube Nitro Gas | Twin-tube big-bore, vehicle and weight-specific valving | Daily driving, touring, towing and general 4WD upgrades | Straightforward fixed-valving upgrade with larger bodies and increased oil capacity |
| IMS | Internal floating piston monotube with 50 or 60 mm piston depending on application | Corrugations, long trips, towing, heavy work and sustained demanding use | Improved heat transfer and fade resistance with high-flow monotube construction |
| MRR | Monotube remote reservoir with three-way damping adjustment | Serious off-road use, changing loads and drivers wanting detailed tuning | Separate high-speed compression, low-speed compression and rebound adjustment |
Dobinsons Twin Tube Nitro Gas
Dobinsons Twin Tube Nitro Gas shock absorber range for daily driving and touring
Dobinsons Twin Tube Nitro Gas shock absorbers deliver proven, robust damping control for daily driving, weekend off-roading, and touring. Featuring big-bore internal pistons, twin-wall stone damage protection, and multi-lip NOK seals, they provide long-lasting reliability without complex external valving.
- Twin-tube design protects internal working cylinder from flying stones and debris
- Low-pressure nitrogen gas eliminates oil aeration and cavitation
- Heavy-duty rubber bushings for noise reduction and chassis flex compliance
- Tailored spring rates matched to constant front and rear accessory weights
Dobinsons IMS Monotube (Internal Monotube Shock)
Dobinsons IMS monotube shock absorber range with 50 mm / 60 mm bore
Dobinsons IMS monotube shock absorbers feature an internal floating piston (IFP) separating high-pressure nitrogen gas from the shock oil. The 50mm or 60mm bore provides superior heat dissipation over corrugations, preventing shock fade and providing firm, precise chassis control for heavily laden touring rigs.
- Large single-tube body sheds heat significantly faster than twin-tube dampers
- Heavy-duty micro-polished chrome piston rod resists stone pitting
- Threaded body allows precise front ride-height adjustment on strut applications
- Fully rebuildable and re-valvable design for sustained demanding use
Dobinsons MRR Remote Reservoir (3-Way Adjustable)
Dobinsons MRR 3-way adjustable remote-reservoir shock absorbers with high/low speed compression and rebound tuning
The MRR (Monotube Remote Reservoir) range represents Dobinsons' flagship off-road competition and severe touring suspension. By relocating the gas and secondary oil volume into an external aluminium reservoir, heat dissipation is maximized. Independent dials allow high-speed compression, low-speed compression, and rebound damping to be adjusted separately.
- Independent high-speed compression tuning for aggressive bumps and washouts
- Low-speed compression tuning to control body roll, brake dive, and swaying
- Rebound adjustment to prevent rapid extension after suspension compression
- Braided high-pressure lines and 6061 aluminium lightweight reservoir canisters
Shocks control movement, but springs carry the weight. When selecting Dobinsons suspension, our technicians account for your bull bar, winch, dual battery, canopy, drawers, and towing weights to ensure the correct spring rate is installed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Dobinsons IMS and Twin Tube?
Twin Tube shocks feature a dual-wall design that protects against stone damage, ideal for everyday driving and touring. IMS shocks are high-pressure monotubes with larger oil volume and an internal floating piston, delivering much higher fade resistance on severe corrugations.
Are Dobinsons MRR shocks adjustable?
Yes, Dobinsons MRR shocks provide 3-way external damping adjustment: high-speed compression, low-speed compression, and rebound damping.
Does Dobinsons suspension include a lift?
Yes, Dobinsons suspension systems typically provide a 40mm to 50mm (approx. 2-inch) lift depending on the vehicle model and selected spring rates.
Does a Dobinsons lift kit increase legal GVM?
A standard lift kit does not increase legal GVM. However, Dobinsons offers certified GVM Upgrade kits with secondary manufacturing compliance for selected vehicle models.
Can The Ute Shop fit Dobinsons suspension on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. The Ute Shop supplies and professionally installs Dobinsons Twin Tube, IMS, MRR, and GVM systems at our Warana workshop.
